Season 1 Recap and Review
People that know me know that I have one love above all else — Superman. He has always been my favorite and I’ll go down swinging claiming that he is in fact the greatest superhero in the history of the world. My feelings are strong, the evidence is stronger.
This all means that I am obviously watching the CW series Superman and Lois. Not only because of Superman, but because of Lois Lane. I said before that I love Superman above all else… well that may have been a lie. I actually love Lois Lane above all else. She is my favorite character of all time. So, I am thrilled she gets her name in the title of the show. Lois & Clark are together again! They aren’t in Metropolis working at the Daily Planet, but we can’t have all our dreams come true, can we? I’ll settle for another Superman show set in Smallville, Kansas. The last show set in Smallville, after all, is my favorite show of all time. But this is a new chapter, with new actors, and a very different vibe.
The first season had its ups and downs, but overall it was a very strong opening season and will no doubt have many, many more. It is easily the best of the “Arrowverse” shows right now, but that is to be expected. The first few seasons of The Flash were pretty spectacular, but like all things, that spectacular streak came to an end. It’s still the signature “Arrowverse” show, but Superman and Lois is proving to be next in line for the throne.
Here’s a quick run-through of each episode with my MVP, Favorite Moment, and Rating. (warning, this list is subjective and biased)
Episode 1: Pilot
MVP: Clark Kent
Favorite Moment: The entire opening montage. I cried, I cheered, I loved it. The music is sooooo good. I love the Superman theme for this show.
My Rating: 9 out of 10. I wanted at least one more big Lois moment in this episode.
Episode 2: Heritage
MVP: Jonathan Kent
Favorite Moment: Lois versus Edge at the city council meeting.
My Rating: 8 out of 10. The Fortress of Solitude was not as epic or emotional as I wanted it to be.
Episode 3: The Perks of Not Being a Wallflower
MVP: Superman
Favorite Moment: Superman rushing in to save Lois after she pushes the ELT. And everything that happened after that with the fight.
My Rating: 8 out of 10. Superman using multiple powers in a fight!
Episode 4: Haywire
MVP: Lois Lane
Favorite Moment: Lois and Clark argument (if you can even call it that). And the Lois and Lana scene.
My Rating: 8 out of 10. It reminded me of Jitters. (Shout out to the Smallville fans)
Episode 5: The Best of Smallville
MVP: Martha Kent
Favorite Moment: All of the flashbacks.
My Rating: 7 out of 10. Martha needs more than a bench! And I can’t believe Clark didn’t hug her. And left her alone on that bench.
Episode 6: Broken Trust
MVP: Superman
Favorite Moment: Lois and “Lex” (The Stranger? Marcus?) explore the Shuster mines. Superman taking bullets for innocent people..I’ll watch that all day, every day.
My Rating: 6 out of 10. This episode was a little repetitive.
Episode 7: Man of Steel
MVP: John Henry Irons
Favorite Moment: Lois and Clark in the truck talking about Lex Luthor and the multiverse!
My Rating: 7 out of 10. It was action-packed, but I do not like that Lois was killed by Superman on any earth.
Episode 8: Holding the Wrench
MVP: Lois Lane
Favorite Moment: Everything Lois did in this episode. Her scenes with her therapist and Jonathan were the clear standouts.
My Rating: 9 out of 10. Amazingly emotional and fantastically written.
Episode 9: Loyal Subjekts
MVP: Superman
Favorite Moment: Clark and Jordan at the fortress.
My Rating: 7 out of 10. Not sure how I feel about alien consciousnesses.
Episode 10: O Mother, Where Art Thou?
MVP: Lana Lang
Favorite Moment: Lara El speaking through Lana Lang. Lana speaking with Superman.
My Rating: 8 out of 10. I love when Superman mythos remembers Kal El has a mother. Sometimes Superman stuff can forget that Superman,/ Clark/Kal had moms!
Episode 11: A Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events
MVP: Lois and Clark
Favorite Moment: The Brief Reminiscence In-Between Cataclysmic Events… Superman saving Lois from Atom Man and looking at her in slow-motion while he is on fire.
My Rating: 9 out of 10. I still wish it was canon for them to have had the twins in Argo City.
Episode 12: Through the Valley of Death
MVP: Clark Kent
Favorite Moment: Lois and John Henry scene when she tells him that she’s married to Superman on this earth.
My Rating: 7 out of 10. John Diggle's cameo was a little disappointing. But the Kent family scene near the end was perfect.
Episode 13: Fail Safe
MVP: Lana Lang
Favorite Moment: Lois and Chrissy's conversations about what information people have the right to know.
My Rating: 7 out of 10. I enjoyed watching Lana take charge and call people out.
Episode 14: The Eradicator
MVP: Leslie Larr
Favorite Moment: The kids at the party watching Lois and Superman on the news.
My Rating: 7 out of 10. John Henry saves Superman and Lois a little too much in this show.
Episode 15: Last Sons of Krypton
MVP: Superman
Favorite Moment: Superman’s speech near the end. And Lois and Leslie Larr confrontation at the DEO.
My Rating: 8 out of 10.
Overall, I love this show. It’s beautifully shot, well-written, and well-acted. Are there things I would change? Absolutely. But I’m here for the story they are telling with the characters that I love. I can only hope that season two has better episode titles… I don’t know why, but I hate the names of nearly all of their episodes.
