Cryptids

 

Mothman

On November 15th, 1966, at approximately 11:30 pm, two young couples, Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette encountered a terrible creature — A large winged monster with glowing red eyes. The Mothman reportedly flies around Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and is connected with various paranormal and alien activities in the area.

Bray Road Beast

Elkhorn, Wisconsin may just be home to a genuine American werewolf. Spotted on Bray Road in the early nineties, this werewolf-type creature has instilled fear into many who travel down that dark and eerie road. An 18-year-old girl reported hitting a large animal with her car on Bray Road. When she got out to see what it was, she claimed it as a wolf-like creature standing on its two hind legs.

Loch Ness Monster

The first documented sighting of a monster lurking in Loch Ness dates back to 565 AD and features Saint Columbia, the Irish saint who reportedly came face to face with a water monster. It was not until 1933 that Nessie would emerge as one of the most popular monsters of all time. Cryptozoologist Richard Freeman claims that the Loch Ness Monster and the loch wherein she resides are the most famous monster and lake in the world. Nessie is a large plesiosaur-type monster.

Jersey Devil

Said to be roaming around the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, is a creature known as the Jersey Devil. With the head of a dog, but the face of a horse this creature has large wings, horns, and even a tail. It’s a conglomeration of your worst nightmare in the woods. Its hoofed feet were first reported over 200 years ago and sightings still occur today.

Champ

On July 5, 1977, a woman named Sandra Mansi saw something in Lake Champlain’s waters as her family took a quick lunch break during a road trip. She took her camera out and documented something unusual in the water. Her photograph would become the most iconic image associated with Champ, the lake monster of Lake Champlain. Champ is a massive water creature that has been spotted in the lake for years.

Lizard Man

In 1988 a teenager reported seeing a large reptile creature to the Lee County Sherrif’s Department. Through the years, other sightings of a Lizard Man in and around Scape Ore Swamp in Bishopville, South Carolina have been reported.

Bigfoots

 

Honey Island Swamp Monster

Deep in the swamps of Louisiana lives a large, ferocious monster. First officially seen in the 1960s by two veteran hunters, the creature is described as being over 7-feet tall, with grey hair and a horrendous stench. Sightings of such a creature go back hundreds of years. Despite some of the obvious similarities to Bigfoot, the footprints of these monsters typically have only 3 or 4 toes, unlike the 5 toed Sasquatch of the Pacific Northwest.

Fouke Monster

Made famous by the cult classic film The Legend of Boggy Creek, the Fouke Monster is one of the most well-known Sasqutches ever. A report from the Texarkana Gazette, dated May 3, 1971, describes a “large, hairy apelike creature that walked upright on two legs,” standing close to seven feet tall with red glowing eyes and a rank odor.

Orang Pendek

Indonesia’s Bigfoot. Spotted on the island of Sumatra by local villagers, Dutch colonists, and western scientists, these bipedal primates are actually on the smaller side. They have short reddish/brown hair and stand at only three or so feet tall.

Yeti

The monster that has plagued the Himilayas for decades and Asia’s abominable snowman! The Yeti is a large, white, bipedal monster that’s been seen in the snowy mountains since the 1960s.

Yowie

The Bigfoot down under! Australian folklore tells of an ape-like creature that stands over ten feet tall. This Outback monster has roots in Aboriginal oral history. The name yowie was used as far back as 1875 and translates to “ a spirit that roams over the earth at night.”

Mapinguari

Brazil’s Bigfoot, known as the Mapinguari, resembles a giant sloth in more recent sightings, but older reports describe it closer to a gorilla. Two of the greatest cryptozoologist of all time, Ivan T. Sanderson and Bernard Heuvelmans considered it an undescribed primate of some sort and connected it with bigfoot-type animals. Some reports claim that the creature has a single eye and a mouth in the middle of its stomach.

The Creature

The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a universal Picture movie from 1954. The Creature is a prehistoric monster that lurks in an Amazon lagoon. When scientists discover a fossil that could link humans to sea-dwelling creatures, an expedition to the lagoon is undergone. When the scientists get there, they discover a sea-dwelling monster with webbed fingers and green scales. This Gill-Man proves his intelligence, by trapping the group’s boat inside the lagoon, hoping to capture the lovely Kay, played by Julie Adams.

The Mummy

Another Boris Karloff monster! The Mummy follows Imhotep, an ancient Egyptian mummy who was discovered by a group of archeologists. He is accidentally brought back to life through a magic scroll. (Quick plug for the 1999 very loose re-make —It’s awesome!)

Dracula

Who doesn’t know a little bit about Dracula? In 1931, Universal Pictures released a film starring Bela Lugosi as the charismatic vampire. Count Dracula first appeared in Bram Stoker’s novel, but Lugosi made him the iconic image of a vampire we know so well today.  

The Invisible Man

Based on the HG Wells novel, The Invisible Man tells the tale of a man who…becomes invisible. Released in 1933, this film follows a chemist who discovers the secret of invisibility who uses his new-found ability to go on a killing spree.  

Frankenstein’s Monster

Not to be confused with Frankenstein himself! Frankenstein’s Monster was created by scientist Viktor Frankenstein in his lab in an attempt to bring back the dead. In the 1931 classic film, Boris Karloff plays the role of The Monster. He is a tall, bumbling, square-headed green monster with a lonely heart and a tragic existence.

The Wolfman

It’s a werewolf! The Wolfman played by Lon Chaney Jr, is a man who became cursed after purchasing a silver walking stick with a wolf’s head on the end at a carnival. While attacked by a wolf in the woods one night, the man uses the stick to kill the wolf, but in the process, was bitten. He then finds himself turning into a wolf creature in the dead of night.

Even a man who is pure in heart

and says his prayers by night

may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms

and the autumn moon is bright.

Aliens

 

Greys

Also known as Roswell Greys. These aliens are grey in color. Most alien encounters reported are described as grey aliens. It’s the most common alien visual. Close your eyes.. think of an alien…it’s most likely a GREY!

 

E.T.

E.T. phone home! Unfortunately, ET is verifiably fictional. But he deserves to be here nonetheless. E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial becomes friends with a young boy named Elliot, but can’t stay on Earth. He must find a way to get back home.

Flatwoods Monster

Something flew across the sky on a dark night in West Virginia. The year was 1952 when a group of young boys spotted a red streak make its way to Earth. The group had a horrifying encounter with a massive monster, now known as The Flatwoods Monster. It was about ten feet tall with a red and green body and a glowing face.

 

Indrid Cold

A man named Woodrow Derenberger claims to have communicated telepathically with an extraterrestrial being named Indrid Cold who stopped him on the side of the road in Parkersburg, located approximately fifty-five miles north of Point Pleasant. Derenberger told his story of meeting Indrid Cold live on live TV in Parkersburg West Virginia, on November 3rd, 1966.

Hopkinsville Goblins

In 1955 the town of Hopkinsville, Kentucky was invaded by little green men. Locals claimed to have seen a flying saucer hover in the sky, where several small green creatures were seen roaming the fields shortly after. Some witnesses even allege that they fought with these tiny green creatures as they were trying to invade their homes.

 

Betty and Barney

Betty and Barney Hill were reportedly abducted by aliens in the fall of 1961. The New Hampshire couple claimed that gray beings with large eyes walked them inside a large metallic disc. The aliens examined them and then earased their memories.
